The Queensland Motor Traders Association is preparing mechanics for the new EV era.

Over 1500 firms in Queensland are represented by the Motor Traders Association of Queensland ( MTAQ ). Recently, I had a conversation with Rod Camm Group Chief Executive on Australia’s difficulties and prospects, particularly for automotive workers, as we move toward an electric car future.

Rod is from the skills sector and has experience in leadership. Rapid improvements are required due to the enormous skill shortages both domestically and internationally. To make sure that the system can keep up with ongoing important technological changes, industry-based training models are required. The automobile sector may be experiencing a dramatic turning point for the first time, and skills may be the key to releasing our future potential.

The car industry is represented by MTAQ before the government and the larger business community. One of its main services is to offer apprentices (up to 2,500 each year) and qualified craftsmen top-up training. Along with teaching people about established technologies, MTAQ also provides training in 21st-century emergent technologies. Naturally, electric vehicles play a significant role in this. Health and safety at work come first.

Top-up instruction is provided in modern driver assistance systems, air conditioning, and safe battery management (ADAS). MTAQ runs a “Centre of Excellence” for training and also conducts training in-person at businesses.

Women make up only 4% of technicians, although making up a variety of demographics in a typical “top up” training group, including age, experience, and trades. Although auto electricians, panel beaters, and first responders are also present, mechanics make up the majority of the attendees.

Independent mechanics haven’t seen as many electrified vehicles (HEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs) as dealership employees have, thanks to OEMs. They are preparing themselves. To show his students, Rod has been able to get a variety of electric cars (EVs), including models from Tesla, Hyundai, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. Later this year, he is eager to demonstrate a BYD Atto 3 to his students.

Industry sources claim that so far, they have mostly seen and repaired hybrids. Since they have been on the market for so long, this is to be expected. He mentioned the troubles Tesla has encountered with ball joints in response to my question about specific BEV problems (mine had to be replaced under warranty, so I understand). He explains that the extra wear caused by the car’s weight and torque is the cause of this issue.

“Australia has been slow to adopt electric vehicles, but if we have a sound national strategy, I think we can both get it right and quickly catch up. I pay close attention to what is happening in the UK and other developed European countries like Norway. Our opportunity is to learn from the mistakes committed by other nations. Examples include the requirement for uniformity in charging and payment methods, making sure the national grid is constructed on speedy chargers, and taking advantage of the location of existing automotive assets like service stations.

One of the best organizations providing training for future technology is MTAQ. We appreciate that because we need our tradies to be ready.
