At least on the social media platforms I frequent, Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement of a company name change was roundly criticized today. People were making fun of the new name (Meta), VR and AR, and other stuff on Twitter. While some users on YouTube pulled out the typical jokes about lizards and androids, many others expressed their concern that Facebook’s darker aspects would spread to create an authoritarian and horrible virtual world that we are all forced to engage in.

You’ll find no shortage of commentators telling you about the potential downsides and how virtual worlds are going to go nowhere, but I wanted to give a more practical view of the challenges the Metaverse concept faces as well as the many gains society stands to make if people working on the Metaverse concept succeed.
