To build electric vehicles in America, Sony and Honda may forego using dealers.

The establishment of a new business called Sony Honda Mobility, which would jointly produce electric vehicles, was announced by Sony and Honda in June. Sony’s aim is to flood the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology, according to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida at the time. We hope to advance our mission to “make the mobility space an emotional one” and contribute to the evolution of mobility centered around safety, entertainment, and adaptability through this partnership with Honda, which has amassed extensive global experience and accomplishments in the automotive industry over many years and continues to make groundbreaking advancements in this field.

The new business stated in an joint press conference this week that one of Honda’s 12 US manufacturing plants, most likely in Ohio, where Honda has been producing motorcycles and vehicles for decades, will be responsible for producing the cars. The first deliveries will start in 2026, and it will start taking orders in late 2025.

The new EVs will be created with an emphasis on their function as entertainment places that offer music and games, in addition to more conventional components like performance and safety, claims Nikkei Asia . In the spring of 2026, the first delivery is anticipated in North America. Delivery in Japan is anticipated to start in the second half of 2026, according to the joint venture’s chairman Yasuhide Mizuno on Thursday. European sales could follow.

The joint venture wants to market its electric vehicles (EVs) as places to visit even if you’re not driving. According to Mizuno, the business would look into “new entertainment possibilities” such fusing the physical and digital worlds, employing the metaverse, and “building new communities” within the mobile environment.

THE POSSIBILITY OF ONLINE SALES Online sales will be the joint venture’s primary focus in an effort to “engage directly with customers,” according to Mizuno. The vehicles’ prices will be “affordable,” in line with “added high-value” components like software. While Honda will be in charge of creating the automobile itself and developing safety technology, Sony will be responsible for creating the in-car software and entertainment systems.

According to Mizuno, “up until now, cars competed on manufacturer factors” like driving dynamics and safety. Even though these elements would still be crucial, the company wants to create value by fusing them with digital technology and “compete in these areas.”
