Sales of Indian Battery Electric Vehicles Increase

Written with assistance from Jaan at The EV Universe .

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are beginning to find traction in the expanding Indian auto market. India is the fourth-largest auto market in the world. With 354,744 vehicles sold, September 2022 was the best month in the history of the personal vehicle market in India . Sales of two-wheelers, a solid sign of rural purchasing power, increased 12.9% to 1,735,199 units.

This is the setting for an increase in BEV sales in India. India recorded its highest-ever half-yearly sales of battery electric vehicles during the first half of 2022. 20,000 or more units were sold. With 4,451 BEVs registered, June 2022 is now the sales month with the highest volume.

Tata Motors, which holds a 92% market share in the Indian BEV industry, is the market leader. The Tata Tigor EV is the second-best-selling item after the Tata Nexon EV .

The newly released Nexon EV Max, which has a larger battery pack, set a record for monthly sales with 3,070 units. Over 13,000 Nexon EVs were sold by Tata Motors in the year’s first half. Sales of the Tata Tigor have increased by 50% year over year because to an enhanced battery and motor. As a “enhanced product with the correct value proposition,” the car is described. Automobile purchasers are receiving a better vehicle for a lower cost.

.
According to the aforementioned chart, although on a tiny volume, it appears like Indian BEV volume is beginning to touch the vertical.

Readers will observe that H1 2022 has a five-fold increase over H1 2021. Compared to only 0.3% in H1 2021, BEVs now account for 2.2% of the total passenger vehicle market. SUVs are progressively replacing sedans in the vehicle mix (73% SUV, 27% sedan).

From 2018 to 2020, Mahindra Motors was a more major player in the BEV market, but it now seems to have fallen off the list. Who knows what transpired? Tata Motors holds a 92% market share, with MG Motors coming in second with 6%. All other manufacturers are currently minor participants.

MG and Kia have gradually decreased, with MG dropping from 26% in 2020 to 6% today. Hyundai/Kia dropped from 26% to 2% now. Following a redesign, sales of the MG ZS EV have stabilized at about 300 units per month. Due to the delay in a new model, it fell from its peak of 493 in July 2021. With the new MG ZS EV on the market, sales should increase.
