Why Is the Tesla Model Y the Best-Selling Car in China and Europe?

The Tesla Model Y is undeniably in high demand. It shares many characteristics with the Model 3 but is larger and belongs to the popular crossover category with a little hump in the trunk and a higher seating position (with easier human entry and exit).

One may assume that there is only a finite amount of demand for two identically designed cars from the new American automaker Tesla, and that the Model 3 and Model Y would have to share the pie, particularly outside of the United States in Europe and China. The Model 3 has continued to sell well, but the Model Y has quickly risen to the top of the charts in both the European EV sector and the entire Chinese car industry due to the high level of demand for both models. Given that the Model Y only ranked third in the China EV market for the first half of the year, the #1 spot in China was only held for the month of June. The Model 3 is currently in second place in the European EV market, while the Model 1 has held the top spot for the whole first half of the year.

What distinguishes the Model Y (and Model 3) from the several other electric vehicles, including electric crossovers, now available on the market? Why are sales of the Model Y expected to reach 100,000 in Europe and maybe 300,000 in China this year?

The Model Y certainly passes safety testing well, offers plenty of room for luggage and passenger accommodation, and looks beautiful. Additionally, the car has a terrific entertainment system, a reasonable range for the price, and world-class performance. Any of those advantages can be a major deciding factor for many customers. However, everything that has been said so far may be categorized as something that many purchasers consider to be necessary but not determining. A few more factors, in my opinion, are what really set the Model Y apart from the competition and contribute to its strong sales.

SUPERCHARGING #1 Our annual surveys of EV drivers, which have been conducted for several years, have shown that a sizable number of drivers anticipate that their next EV will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network or an equivalent superfast charging network. Buyers are aware that there is yet no company on this market that can compete with Tesla. I’ve spoken with many Tesla owners who said they would purchase another EV if it weren’t for the lack of long-distance charging options. Tesla Superchargers provide superior reliability that is still unmatched in the industry, significantly greater connection in many areas, and a more easy way to charge that only requires a plug-in (and make sure you have a payment method set up in your Tesla app).

It’s interesting to note that Tesla is starting to let other brands to use some of its Superchargers in Europe and the US. The affects on consumers of various types and brands will be fascinating to research.

TESLAS TECH LEADERSHIP IN GENERAL, NO. 2 Technology was discussed in numerous ways above, but my point is that the Tesla brand is now clearly recognizable as a global leader in tech—not only in the auto industry, but more generally. Purchasing a Tesla vehicle entails investing in cutting-edge technology that will only become better with time thanks to over-the-air software updates. I think this Silicon Valley DNA is a significant factor in why so many people want a Tesla, whether it’s actually all the unique tech aspects of a Tesla that sell a person on it or just the aura that comes with owning a tech leader Tesla product. Just from personal experience, I am aware of individuals who don’t really care about the other topics covered in this post but own a Tesla Model X because it is a cool piece of technology.

TESLAS’S IMPACT ON THE EV REVOLUTION, #3 The following point is similar, except it goes a little further and wider. Tesla seems to be mentioned in every discussion regarding electric automobiles. Everyone is familiar with Tesla and has at least a few ideas about him in their head. Even those who are unaware that Tesla only sells 100% electric vehicles have some opinions on the company! But one of the fundamental facts about Tesla that I believe the majority of people are aware of is the fact that it offers only completely electric vehicles. Undoubtedly, as commercial after commercial highlights a particular automaker’s new electric vehicle, consumers are becoming more and more interested in electric vehicles. Electric vehicle advertisements have dominated Super Bowl auto commercials for a few years. We all know that Tesla doesn’t promote, but during Super Bowl weekend or week, there is a noticeable increase in interest in the company on Google. Because everyone is aware that Tesla leads the EV business. Tesla serves as a standard.

When the time comes to buy, some buyers choose a new Volkswagen ID.4 (my sister is in that group), a cool Ford Mustang Mach-E (I’m seeing more and more of these in my area), a Kia EV6 or Hyundai IONIQ 5, (which look so futuristic and cool and I love that I’m already seeing them on a regular basis here in Florida), but a significant portion of the buying public prefers an electric vehicle from the leader in the electric vehicle industry. They want something from a top revolutionary commander, not a car from the old guard, especially if they believe in the idea of an EV revolution. Basic logic, indeed.

Naturally, the Super Bowl discussion and the EVs I’m hearing about around me are relevant to where I live and not to Europe or China, but the situation is essentially the same there as well. While many purchasers may in fact choose for a non-Tesla EV, a sizable portion of them will desire an innovative Tesla.

BATTERIES! #4 PRODUCTION CAPACITY When purchasing a Tesla, you will still have to wait on a long waiting list, but name another automaker that has a higher EV production capacity. There’s no getting around the fact that you can’t sell what you can’t manufacture, and Tesla’s higher manufacturing capacity (and battery supply) enable the company to sell so many electric vehicles (EVs) each quarter in Europe, China, and other countries in addition to the United States. Higher manufacturing capacity also lowers some of the company’s per-unit expenses, which makes Tesla automobiles more competitive and increases Tesla’s profit margin, which can then be used to fund innovation, improved charging infrastructure, more features, and business expansion.

While there are a number of manufacturing constraints, such as Ukrainian-made wiring harnesses and the now-famous automotive semiconductors, batteries are by far the biggest constraint on the EV industry’s ability to produce goods. Long-term battery security has been improved by Tesla, and competitors who wish to defeat the current global behemoth and hold the title for an extended period of time will need to follow suit.

These are my ideas as to why the Tesla Model Y is selling so well worldwide, be it in China, Europe, or the USA. Own any of your own?
