A new public EV charging station has just been made available by the city of Oakland at 519 Lake Park Avenue in Oakland, California. Near Lake Merritt, there is a brand-new rapid charging station for EVgo Inc. (NASDAQ: EVGO). Depending on the charging capability of the car, the new station’s six 200 kW fast chargers may charge a vehicle up to 80% in 15–45 minutes.
The 235 existing public EV chargers in Oakland will be supplemented by the new EVgo station.
The location of the new charging station fills a gap for those who rent or live in apartments and own electric vehicles but lack access to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). There are much more older apartment complexes in the Lake Merritt district than anywhere else in the Bay Area. Therefore, the majority either do not have onsite EVSE or are not able to have EVSE.
Since adopting the Equitable Climate Action Plan in 2020, Oakland has made significant progress in addressing the climate problem while making sure that the people in Oakland who need it the most benefit from our initiatives, according to said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf . This handy new ZEV location demonstrates our dedication to making sure that all Oaklanders, including renters, are a part of this crucial transformation.
To announce the opening of the new charging station, Mayor Schaaf was joined by Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, Shayna Hirshfield-Gold, the Oakland Climate Program Manager, Arthur Bart-Williams from GRID Alternatives, and Sara Rafalson, EVgo’s Vice President of Market Development and Public Policy.
The council president, Nikki Fortunato Bas, said she was “excited to see this new electric vehicle charging station open in my district, ideally placed near to Splash Pad Park, our two bustling business corridors on Grand and Lakeshore, and Lake Merritt, the crown jewel of our city.” “This addition will promote the city’s objectives of equitable and sustainable development while assisting neighboring neighbors in conveniently charging their cars. It will also enhance our capacity to expand access for all neighborhood residents to nearby amenities.”
The equal distribution of public fast charging infrastructure is necessary to increase the number of EV drivers, according to Sara Rafalson, Vice President of Market Development and Public Policy at EVgo. “EVgo focuses on constructing charging stations in practical areas, such as next to Lake Merritt, where motorists can enjoy a bite to eat, stroll through the park, or purchase weekly groceries while charging their EV. In order to facilitate the shift to an all-electric future, we are eager to expand the city of Oakland’s charging infrastructure.
By 2045, Oakland hopes to have an entirely zero-emissions transportation system. The new EVgo station that has been added next to Lake Merritt brings Oakland that much further to realizing its Zero Emission Vehicle Action Plan.
Equity of access is prioritized in the City’s Zero Emission Vehicle Action Plan, according to Shayna Hirshfield-Gold, Oakland’s Climate Program Manager. “One important step we can take to remove obstacles to the adoption of electric vehicles is to install public charging stations.”
