Now Shipping: Mercedes-Benz Electric Trucks; More to Come

Large electric trucks are a subject that can easily excite. They can significantly reduce CO2 emissions as well as other types of pollutants that cause cancer, asthma, and a number of other illnesses and fatalities in humans. For this reason, many of us have been eagerly awaiting commercial production ever since the Tesla Semi was introduced in 2017. While we wait for it, Mercedes-Benz has just revealed that the eEconic, one of its own huge electric trucks, has started production. (I concur that the name is extremely muddled.) This Mercedes-Benz truck is not a long-haul semi, but I’ll discuss it at the end of the article after discussing other news about electric trucks and electric truck charging from Mercedes-Benz.

The eEconic is now being produced in series in Wrth, a tiny German town with fewer than 20,000 residents. It might not be Berlin, Germany, or Austin, Texas, but it will do the job.

The eEconic is not a long-haul semi truck, as should be noted. It’s a city vehicle intended for use in public spaces. This design complements and follows the October 2021 release of the Mercedes-Benz eActros, an electric truck for urban use.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the eEconic was created in collaboration with customers and has been putting its design to the test with real customers since May 2022. A Danish business involved in garbage disposal, Urbaser A/S, will get the first vehicle from serial manufacturing. The eEconic in series production has already won the favor of other clients. Over the course of the year, the vehicles are to be delivered one at a time.

The Econic, Unimog, and Zetros are among the other vehicles made at the Wrth Daimler Truck factory in addition to the eEconic and eActros. At the plant, 470 trucks can be made in total per day. How soon will everything be powered by electricity? Over 100,000 trucks are driven there each year. We don’t know how many electric trucks are being manufactured right now, and we have no idea how sluggish of a start it has been. We do know that Daimler Truck intends to sell entirely CO2-neutral cars globally by 2050, beginning in 2039 in North America, Europe, and Japan. If so, we’re a long way from there.

Not only that, though.

EACTROS UPGRADES

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has unveiled some upgrades for the aforementioned eActros electric truck. It may now be ordered with this trailer add-on and has received approval for us as a truck-and-trailer combination with a 40-ton maximum weight. One consumer on the new service explained why this was so important to them: The eActros is the perfect truck and trailer for our needs, according to Rainer Schmitt, managing partner of Logistik Schmitt. The electric truck now offers not only a higher overall weight when combined with the trailer, but also much additional cargo volume. As a result, we can make twice as many journeys with the same number of load carriers.

As part of ongoing testing, Mercedes-Benz Trucks employs the eActros on certain of its own routes. With the electric vehicle, it has traveled 7,000 times over 70,000 kilometers (43,500 miles) since 2019.

And what is the eActros’ range? These are the details for range and battery: The eActros’ batteries are made up of three (eActros 300) or four battery packs (eActros 400), each of which has a capacity of 97 kWh {2} in useable form and 112 kWh {1} in installed capacity. The eActros 400 has a range of up to 400 kilometers {3} with four battery packs.

It can charge at a rate of up to 160 kW, or, more succinctly and practically, if charging at 400 amps, it can take an hour to get from 20% battery capacity to 80% battery capacity.

HOW DO I CHARGE THOSE HUGE ELECTRIC TRUCKS AND WHERE? Mercedes-Benz Trucks has established an eTruck Charging Park in Wrth to assist with charging, customer testing, and other related activities. Customers of electric trucks may now test charging stations and charge concepts from various manufacturers at the eTruck Charging Park. They can also collaborate with Mercedes-Benz Trucks experts present to create tailored charging solutions for their specific applications. The German firm claims that in order to assist clients in making a smooth transition to e-mobility, charging technology is made available for testing along with a wide range of advisory services.

There are currently six charging stations on-site from various businesses. Their power output ranges from 40 kW to 300 kW.

MERCEDES-BENZ LONG-HAUL ELECTRIC TRUCK

The most challenging issue in this developing industry is undoubtedly developing a long-haul electric truck. But the task has already begun. And it appears that Mercedes-Benz is lagging behind Tesla in this area.

The Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul truck is currently being developed, and a 2022 release is anticipated. Five prototypes have been created so far for testing. The eActros LongHaul, with a range of around 500 kilometers on one battery charge, is anticipated to be available for series production in 2024 for the significant long-haul segment.
