Electrify America Upgrades Charging Stations with MEGA Batteries

In Baker, California, Electrify America presented its first implementation of megawatt-level battery storage to guarantee that, regardless of the grid, there is always enough electricity for its clients to charge their electric vehicles.

Although this is the first battery energy storage system (BESS) for EA charging stations, it is crucial to remember that this is not the first BESS. More than 150 BESS installations from the company are currently in use across the US, with more than 100 of those installations in California.

According to Jigar Shah, Head of Energy Services at Electrify America, “the use of the megawatt-level energy storage is the latest example of how we are continuously innovating to handle infrastructure difficulties and satisfy charging needs today.” “We are positioned to enable continuous transportation electrification even in the face of utility capacity constraints,” the company said. “As we expand the use of such solutions to more of our charging stations and also to our medium-duty and heavy-duty electric fleet clients.”

SOLAR POWER ALSO RECEIVES LOVE The new megawatt-level BESS at the Baker location works in tandem with an EA solar canopy (above) to manage energy costs in a more advanced manner than Electrify America’s early BESS systems (yeah, I know — RAS syndrome ). By serving as a buffer to supply extra power to charging stations when local utilities cap the amount of power a station can demand from the grid, the large battery also lessens strain on the nearby energy grid.

Because of its distant location and limited utility capacity, Electrify America chose the Baker station for the initial deployment of the megawatt-level energy storage system. The integration of the roughly 1.5 MW / 3 MWh energy storage system with 66 kW of potential from the station’s solar canopy is EA’s solution for a comprehensive, sustainable way to get power to its customers 24/7, rain or shine, even in a blackout. This is because Baker needs all the help it can get.

To put this into context, Shah stated that Baker’s energy storage device, when completely charged, could supply electricity to a typical household for more than three months on a single charge.

What do you guys think of EA’s battery backup system? It sounds nice to me. Let us know in the comments by scrolling down!
