DB Schenker is helped by Scania On the Swedish Island of Gotland, avoid fossils

Every island is experiencing negative effects from climate change. A few of the issues include infrastructural damage, water shortages, droughts, and floods. The Swedish Gotland region is attempting to mitigate these effects by aiming toward a 2040 fossil-free objective, five years earlier than Sweden’s national deadline. Schenker Keri AB’s attempts to switch all distributional transportation to fossil-free with the aid of Scania are one method they’ve turned the island fossil-free.

In Sweden, we already use electric vehicles and are familiar with how that works. In order to truly make a difference, we are now taking the next step and investing in electrified distribution over the entire region, according to the Head of Land at DB Schenker. Additionally, we learn a lot about how electric operations work in rural areas with distances of more than 300 kilometers as well as metropolitan areas with many of starts and stops.

The move of DB Schenkers to fossil-free operations on Gotland includes two Scania PHEV vehicles and a total of four Scania P25 electric distribution trucks. The goal is to make Gotland the most sustainably managed island region in the world. The fact that DB Schenker is doing such a large-scale electrification project in a remote area makes what it is doing so special.

It’s encouraging to see that DB Schenker, with its extensive domestic and global activities, is serious about the electrification of transportation. This illustrates that electrification is effective even in regions with greater distances between charging stations. remarked Magnus Koeck, Scania Trucks Nordic’s Head of Sales.

The two PHEV vehicles will be utilized for local pick-ups and deliveries in Visby, while the four electric trucks will transport goods from the DB Schenker facility in Visby to clients on the island.

We can learn a lot from what DB Schenker does in Gotland, with a fossil-free system solution in a special setting, about the difficulties and opportunities that arise when an entire distribution center is electrified. Future prospects for the international truck fleet of DB Schenkers are similar, according to Evalena Falck, Scania Sales Director, Strategic Account Management.

Fast-moving electrification of DB Schenkers’ truck fleet is in line with the global objective of making all modes of transportation—by land, air, and sea—climate neutral by 2040. The business claims it is making every effort to achieve this target even more quickly.

German Railways’ DB Schenker is a logistics company that specializes in the rail sector. Schenker-Stinnes, which had divisions for air freight, land freight, and sea freight, as well as contract logistics and overland transport, was bought by Deutsche Bahn in 2002. North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s Essen, is home to the company’s headquarters.

Sweden’s largest island is called Gotland, also spelled Gothland or Gottland. It is also a county, municipality, diocese, and a province. The province includes the Karls Islands as well as the northern islands of Fr and Gotska Sandn (Little and Great). The archipelago contains roughly 6,000 islands. The principal cities are Slite and Visby, which serve as the regional and municipal capitals.
