$423 million in funding is available for the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust in California

California will receive around $423 million from the Volkswagen (VW) Environmental Mitigation Trust to reduce the excessive nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions brought on by VW’s deployment of illegal emissions testing defeat devices in some VW diesel vehicles.

How To Apply For VW Environmental Mitigation Trust Funding

HOW DO I APPLY FOR FUNDING? WHAT TYPES OF VEHICLES OR EQUIPMENT ARE ELIGIBLE? The table below lists the five kinds of cars and equipment that qualify for assistance. To apply for financing or learn more about when funding will be available, choose from the options below:

SCHOOL, SHUTTLE, AND ZERO-EMISSION TRANSIT BUSES Are You Interested in Clean Bus Funding?

To replace older, highly polluting transit, school, and shuttle buses with new battery-electric or fuel-cell buses, the VW Mitigation Trust has $130 million in funding. Particulate matter and other pollutants that affect children and others using the buses as well as people living in communities around California are eliminated when an older bus is replaced with a zero-emission bus. 425 automobiles will be replaced throughout the course of the project’s ten-year lifespan with incentives of up to $400,000 per vehicle.

CLASS 8 FREIGHT AND PORT DRAYAGE TRUCKS CATEGORY ZERO-EMISSION The goal of this category is to increase the availability of zero-emission trucks in the largest weight class, which has traditionally relied on diesel technologies.

Timeline and Availability of Funding

Program Announcement #PA2021-01 for the VW Mitigation Program Zero-Emission Class 8 Freight and Port Drayage Trucks category has about $9 million in project funds available. On a first-come, first-served basis, this request will be made available to qualified companies throughout the state. Beginning at 1:00 PM PST on August 9, 2022, applications will be accepted online through the GMS. When all of the available monies have been distributed, the solicitation will end.
